The Hospital and School

The UMass-Memorial Medical Center is a two-campus merged health care center comprised of the University Medical School Campus and the Memorial Hospital Campus located 2 miles apart in Worcester. Together they comprise an over 800-bed capacity medical center and serve as the dominant tertiary care referral center for all of central and western Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and northern Connecticut. The University Campus houses a Level I trauma center with a two-helicopter aeromedical evacuation system, burn center, cancer center, children's medical center, multiorgan transplantation facility, and all other tertiary care programs. The hospital is attached to the UMass Medical School Campus. The school has a national reputation for excellence in education and research. It ranks in the top third of all medical schools and 2nd among public institutions in the Northeast in NIH funding. The medical school has completed construction and occupation of a new 11-story, 400,000 square foot research building.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School and the UMass Memorial Health Care are in the planning stages of a complex array of projects that will cahnge the face of the University campus and our academic health center. Many construction projects are currently underway, including the addition of 200,000 square feet to the east side of the univeristy hospital. This will double the size of the emergency room, allow the addition of 12 new operating suites and 20 intensive care unit beds. The radiology department is expanding and will be adding 3 new interventional rooms. A second 1,600 car parking garage is under construction on the south side of the hospital. The main entrance to the medical school and hospital is being refurbished. The gray granite facade is being replaced with a beige brimstone in keeping with the color of the other buildings on the university campus.
